CAROL'S GARDEN

Carol's garden had outgrown its design after 10 years.  Due to drought, it was receiving minimal water and some plants were doing well but many were not thriving.  Carol wanted to replace her back lawn, add color to the front, and make the entire garden drought-tolerant.

New Plants Laid Out

We installed the new perennials in November. They had time to get established before spring bloom.

Colorful and Drought Tolerant

The new garden is mostly salvias, which are bright and long-blooming, as well as drought tolerant and low maintenance. We added a small cutting garden and moved the bench to the corner to make the garden more useable.

Overgrown and Underwatered

The back yard had been neglected, although Carol and her family used it frequently.  She knew she didn't want to water or mow a lawn, and wanted more color and plants, but wasn't sure where to start.

Decomposed Granite Replaces Lawn

DG is a lovely, permeable surface that complements the colors Carol wanted for her back yard.  We kept the existing hardscape and sitting wall, and incorporated new curves into the borders to integrate the two areas.

Space for Play and Lounging

We removed the lawn, expanded the borders and added hardy border plants such as oak leaf hydrangeas and carpet roses.  We added decomposed granite in the back area next to the seating for the family's game area.
